Improvisation

Sarah began learning improvisation in 2011 while studying her undergrad degree at the University of Sydney.  Through the University of Sydney Union, she trained under Australian champion improviser Steen Raskopolous and began performing regularly on Manning Stage in 2012.  The Union’s lunchtime Theatresports shows were a highly anticipated weekly event performed every Thursday to an audience of hundreds.

In 2013 she began also performing at the University of NSW weekly Theatresports shows while continuing to learn from Australian champion improvisers Bridie Connell, Tom Walker, and Carlo Ritchie.  As the event was new on the UNSW calendar, audiences numbers would range from the painful single digits to ~50.  While difficult, this provided the ideal opportunity to learn to perform compellingly without being intimidated by large or small audience numbers.

Sarah was during this time also involved in The Bunker, a 100-hour-long improvised play and world record attempt.  For details click here.

By the end of 2013, Sarah had moved to Edinburgh, U.K., and set up her own improvisation lessons.  Attendees ranged from ages 19-40.  Through this she met some of Scotland’s best improvisers, including the Men With Coconuts, who invited her on as a guest performer in their 2014 Edinburgh Fringe show.  She also expanded her knowledge of long-form, performed a blacklight long-form show in Edinburgh’s Hidden Door Festival 2014 with Will Naameh, Charles Hindley, and Paddy Hare, and was featured in episode 6 of the Improv Scotland Podcast, hosted by Mara Craig.

Between 2015 and 2017 Sarah was improvising less while focussing on other projects.  In 2018, she was again back to improvising in Edinburgh, this time performing at the TBC Improv Theatre‘s Open Improv Night and The Cutting Room.

New this year, Sarah is offering improvisation workshops.  For more information, click here.
